You're one of those folks who get very emotionally connected to their characters, consider them independent emotional beings in some respects.

I am.

Although there are only a couple I feel emotionally connected to, it does happen. And the emotions are not always positive; I can’t imagine a single one of my characters I would call “my baby” or such.

Regardless of that, there are a few that I do consider independent beings. A few more than I am connected to.
