A PRINCE HEREAFTER

[This started out as a personal sketch blog but quickly became an haha-tumblr-is-hilarious-and-everything-goes blog. I also started this thing called Character Solidifying Sunday; related to this I talk way too much about my OCs.

verhkrys asked:

I can't find the posts you made for your pirate-world and I can't read my writing (Akaseth? Akweth?) but for the place Helmut and Septimus and such come from is the water all mostly salt? Or do they have some sort of crazy freshwater oceans? Where does most of the freshwater come from (or do the people there have an ability to drink salt water)? And are there any religions or interesting folktales specific to that world or any of its places?

It is AKWETH. Which is a name I don’t really like, but that’s still its name.

And yes, the oceans are all saltwater oceans. Most of the freshwater would come from inland, from lakes and streams and melting mountain ice- and they do have the knowledge and ability of how to purify salt water. In fact, with the amount of salt water on the planet, they probably have a even more methods to do so than we would.

There are folktales and religions, but before I talk about them I should note that during the present time period, it is an age of SCIENCE AND PROGREEEESSION and believing in mythologies is often ridiculed. Many of the religions are based around a similar pantheon of water based gods, and many of the morals are based around the idea that if you are not a productive citizen the ocean will destroy everything you love.

There is at least one interesting religion based on the idea that if the pantheon of gods are mainly to do with water, then maybe the creatures that live in the ocean are “god’s children” and not themselves, so they are meant to serve instead of dominate. This may be where the part of the misnomer of a name, godfish, came to be for the people like Axiom.

verhkrys asked:

Is there ever more than one Impven on a ship? And how do impvens reproduce? (Is the plural 'impvens' or is it one of those words where it, as it is, is both singular and plural or what? impvens just sounds strange to me is why I'm asking.)

I actually planned on the plural being impves, but I keep saying impvens instead. I DON’T KNOW. So far plural for impven sounds kind of silly all around; I’ll get back to you on that if I find something better than impvens.

No, there is not more than one impven on a ship. They are incredibly hard to capture and very expensive to buy- but even if multiple impvens were available, they become very territorial on ships and away from the wild. If this wouldn’t be fatal for one impven or the other, then there would at least be some injuries.

They reproduce sexually, but once on a ship the chances of them meeting another impven (no less a potential mate) are slim to none. There are some impven dealers that try to breed them away from the wild, but so far there’s been no methods that have proven to last more than a couple or two to produce offspring outside of the wild.

Piratic! Some Notes and Stuff.

So, this is probably going to be long- and if I can figure out how to do the ‘read more’ without it screwing up stuff I will. But if that doesn’t work, I’m sorry.

This is all stuff from an old story/comic I wanted to work on simply called Piratic! I had several fleshed out characters and a detailed world, but there was no plot and so I could never really work on it.

  • Settings

The World: Akweth

Awesome drawing skills. Anyhow, that’s Akweth. It’s a planet that’s about the size of an Earth and a half, is in a similar period of technology and invention as we are, has a lot of water and a lot of smaller islands and continents. Not a huge amount of land mass. I should also note that there is MAAAGIC on this planet and that magic is incorporated in much of their technology. The characters and their stories mainly take place on this world.

The Ship: Randomesque

Okay, a couple things- one is that I realized the ship probably wouldn’t look QUITE that modern. Also, that’s not the actual name of the ship. The ship is unnamed, which is incidentally considered unlucky. Commodore Septimus wants to call it the Randomesque and Captain Helmut (you’ll learn about these two below) wants to call it the Wave-Waker. The crew thinks both of these are stupid names, but for convenience’s sake we’ll call it the Randomesque.

The Randomesque has the unique ability to create portals and jump to other worlds, dimensions, and times. No one aboard knows how or why it does this, but Arved (see below) suspects that this is the same ship made some 80 years ago during the Great Wars that went mysteriously missing.

The Randomesque is very good at somehow always ending back at Akweth, the home planet. It is not very good at finding any other planet that it’s been to before (one of the reasons Garro is stuck in a foreign place and not on the ship). And it’s only occasionally good at landing in water on other planets. The ownership of the Randomesque is currently being fought over between Septimus and Helmut.

  • Main Characters

Garro:

Incidentally, Garro was not a main character- but because I’m pretty sure he’s the only one people will be familiar with, we’re starting with him. Also, this is the first sketch I’ve liked of him because he looks younger. Garro is apart of Septimus’ crew, and was a Baelzioc demon cursed into being a human. His hair color remained the same color as his fur. He tends to be seen in a leather apron and working belt, he dislikes people, and his near photographic memory and other skills make him one of the greatest mechanics that ever lived. Because he was so large and volatile as a Baelzioc, he often slept in the brig, and he continued that habit as a human. Recently was separated from the Randomesque when it moved on to the next planet, and eventually found himself at a place called Resting Grounds.

Commodore Septimus:

An amnesiac that woke aboard the Randomesque, and after years or so of trying to get her bearings, came back to the hidden ship and made her career as a pirate. Also owns a ship called the Gauntlet. Is considered crafty and clever, occasionally merciless, and partially mentally unwell. During a card game with Helmut, she bet the Randomesque, and lost it. The next day she came back and stole it from him. He claims this is unfair and dishonorable, which is where the dispute of ownership arose.

Captain Helmut:

Helmut’s father was a prince and his mother was a godfish, or sea demon, that got with him the night before he was married.  A quick idea of a godfish would be a mermaid mixed with an elf. Anyhow, when nine or so months later when Helmut showed up at the now king’s place, he was treated as kind of a servant. Nothing too horrible, but when he was old enough he ran away. He doesn’t particularly like people’s reactions to his appearance. Now it’s even worse since he has tons of scars and a glass eye.

Although he possesses none of the powers or abilities that his mother’s people did, he’s still treated as something of an apparition and bad omen of ill luck. This is particularly useful as a pirate.

He’s stoic, but not particularly harsh. He and Septimus are pretty much kissemesises.

——

  • Some Other Characters

Axiom:

Helmut’s half brother, and a full godfish. He’s often considered as something of an ambassador with humankind and is one of the few godfish willing to talk to Helmut, who is considered an abomination.

Hansel and Fritz:

Twins of Septimus’ crew. Both are older, kind of heavy-set. Hansel is the cook, and Fritz… well, Fritz was never quite the same after he tried to headbutt that shark in the mouth.

Selena:

Part of Helmut’s crew, but attempted a mutiny against both Helmut and Septimus for the Randomesque and almost killed Septimus in the process. She’s currently in the brig until they figure out what to do with her.

Bastion:

A naval captain of Silvatos, one of the larger countries (and actually the country Helmut’s dad is in charge of), who is hunting down pirates. Septimus is his number one target. He’s the reason Septimus and Helmut are attempting to work together on the same ship right now.

Arved:

A mousy young man, often considered the foremost expert on ships and their designs in the world. He’s a childhood friend of Helmut, but because of his constant illness he’s never actually been aboard a ship until recently. And now he’s stuck aboard the Randomesque until they find their way home.

Impven:

An impven is a creature, about half the size of a housecat, that is considered something of a necessity of any ship. A ship without an impven is considered unlucky and will most likely meet a dire end. Impvens grow very attached to a ship, and once aboard they will most likely live on that ship for the rest of their life, even if ownership changes. They tend to have the same name as the ship as well. (For example, if there was a USS Charlotte, the impven’s name would then be Charlotte.) Because the Randomesque doesn’t actually have a name, the impven aboard is just called Impven. They have long fingers on their front paws, prehensile tails, and four eyes. They also have very human intelligence and pick up languages well.

Impvens will look for problems on any ship, usually smaller things like cracks in the hull or pipes, and fix them. If they catch or suspect an individual of harming the ship in any way, they will attack that person in very subtle, but venomous ways. They don’t interact with people normally and try to avoid them, but they do like watching. Impvens will find some place where they can’t be seen and just watch those on the ship for hours on end. There’s a chance that if there’s an impven on your ship, you’ll never actually see it.

Lesser Imps:

I should also bring up Lesser Imps. Lesser Imps do not possess human intelligence, they lack fur and prehensile tails and longer fingers and four eyes- but they are considered something of a substitute impven. Ships that cannot afford an impven will often keep a Lesser Imp in a bird cage somewhere on board. Lesser Imps can be very destructive and should not be let out of imprisonment if they are on a ship.

Denzel Sibelius:

A disproportionally large striped hyena (used to be a spotted hyena, but I like drawing the pointier ears and muzzle and interesting fur patterns with striped hyenas) with button eyes that is kept by Septimus. It spends most of the time in her quarters and is known for having a diet of yarn and raw meat. Septimus says she got Denzel from a ‘voodoo man’ on one of their travels.

Baelzioc demons:

A gorilla-like animal to the north in Akweth. Despite it’s almost ridiculous fuzzy appearance and bright colors; it is noted for being incredibly dangerous for its size, amount of muscle, violence, and ability to split its face down the middle and devour things half its size.

Despite their dangerous nature, there are several that are captured and sought after by ships because of their brute strength and useful skills.

And I can’t think of anything else for Piratic right now, but hopefully some of that was interesting!
