A PRINCE HEREAFTER

[This started out as a personal sketch blog but quickly became an haha-tumblr-is-hilarious-and-everything-goes blog. I also started this thing called Character Solidifying Sunday; related to this I talk way too much about my OCs.

Five Comics That Aren’t Homestuck (Part 3)

Alpha Flag by Jon Cairns and Renee Keyes

“ALPHA FLAG is about a man who has lost his mind and is trying to reclaim its scattered pieces in a hostile environment.”

What are Phantom’s thoughts on this webcomic?

Wonderful artwork, great character design, and really fascinating use of colors. There’s a unique atmosphere in Alpha Flag that I enjoy being explored, and I want to find out more about what happened and why the Diver’s world is functioning in the way it is.

Although I love the surreal qualities of the comic, sometimes it makes it hard to discern whether or not events/motives/etc. will become clear in the future or if I’m just missing them through the haze of that surreality.

If you’re looking for a comic that explores the physical and visual metaphors of a man’s mental state, that is intriguing in its plot and events, and has gorgeous and unique artwork, take a look at Alpha Flag. Also a dude fights a polar bear while wearing diving gear.

*Comic updates slowly.
**Trypophobia warning for some of its content.

Monster Pulse by Magnolia Porter

“An all-ages adventure story about kids whose body parts transform into fighting monsters.”

What are Phantom’s thoughts on this webcomic?

This comic can flip between fun to dark and serious like a pro. The characters are often entertaining, yet at the drop of a pin they can make me aware of how serious the situation they’re in is, or make me aware of how much they feel. Also, it has kids and fighting monsters made from body parts, which is always a plus in my book.

I would like to better understand what drives each character, and sometimes the antagonist/s have a cliche dark government conspiracy feel to them, but I feel those things are being resolved as the comic continues.

If you’d like to read a comic in which there are emotive and sympathetic characters and involves kids who have magical body part monsters, then Monster Pulse is for you.

The Less Than Epic Adventures Of TJ And Amal by E.K. Weaver

“The agreement is simple: Amal does the driving; TJ pays the way - but a 3500 mile journey leaves plenty of time for things to get complicated.”

What are Phantom’s thoughts on this webcomic?

Probably the most amazing backgrounds in any of the webcomics I follow. I also enjoy the characters’ development and interaction. There is a strong focus on the title characters and they—in their dialogue and actions and emotions—come across as very natural and realistic.

However, these title characters rarely have interaction with characters besides each other. I would like to see how they react and interact in different situations with different characters.

If realism and well-written characters developing on a (despite the title) very epic road trip appeal to you, I’d suggest taking a look into The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal.

*Note: This comic contains sexual content.

Sailor Twain (Or The Mermaid In The Hudson) by Mark Siegel

“On the foggy Hudson River, a riverboat captain rescues an injured mermaid from the waters of the busiest port in the United States.”

What are Phantom’s thoughts on this webcomic?

As a note, this comic is unlike the others as it is finished. I really enjoyed Sailor Twain because it often reminded me of something I once read, perhaps with a touch of Mark Twain or Hemingway, but with a touch of fascinating mythology and in graphic novel form. I also think it’s the only webcomic I’ve ever read that used charcoal as its medium. It’s intriguing and very plot driven, with excellent use of light and shadow and gorgeous settings.

It’s been awhile since I read Sailor Twain, so specific weak points don’t come to mind. Yet, I also cannot quite remember any of the characters, which means that—no, they weren’t bad, but that they also weren’t particularly memorable either. Still an excellent story though.

If you’re looking for a very story driven comic that involves steamboats and a river mermaid and basically the fantastic downward spiral of everyone involved, all with amazing and gorgeous settings that add to the atmosphere, take a gander at Sailor Twain (Or The Mermaid in the Hudson).

Prequel (Or Making A Cat Cry: The Adventure) by Kazerad

“Katia Managan arrives at Cyrodiil on a ship and has to face the fact that she has no money, no skills, no friends and an extremely low tolerance for alcohol.”

What are Phantom’s thoughts on this webcomic?

Oh no, OH NO. AN INTERACTIVE WEBCOMIC BASED UPON USER’S RESPONSES? Yes, Prequel is inspired by the MS Paint Adventures comics, but if that’s something that bothers you at least hear me out. Unlike its infamous predecessor, Prequel has a small cast with distinct focus on select characters. And it has a fairly focused plot without five hundred subplots. One of the nicest things about Prequel, besides its humor and interesting plot, is that it contains two of the biggest reasons I believe these types of comics exist and why they’re popular: An ability to interact with its readers and incorporate those interactions into the comic, and experimentation as the internet itself as a medium for the comic experience rather than just a tool to share the comic. Prequel does some really neat things that I have not seen in any other comic, it’s fun, it’s clever, and there are some things that I want to legitimately find out about.

But there are some problems that kind of go hand in hand with the format. One is that the same interaction I love can cause a lot of scenes that have little to do with plot or character interaction and drag out; often times these scenes can be for humor’s sake, but after awhile, just get repetitive. I think this comic would benefit from some condensing in parts.

So, if a comic set in a high fantasy setting that is highly entertaining with a touch of serious plot, that experiments with the use of internet as a medium, and is an enjoyable read sounds like your cup of tea, check out Prequel (Or Making A Cat Cry: The Adventure).

Alpha Flag

I really effin loved that yellow bear, but then I didn’t actually want to look up a reference to find out what bears actually look like so you got Diver instead.

Alpha Flag is a really awesome comic that everyone should check out. Like, one of my few complaints is that I wish it’d update more.
